Exam Syllabus

The UPSC Civil Services Examination is one of the most prestigious exams in India for recruiting candidates into various administrative positions in the government. The syllabus for the UPSC Civil Services Examination consists of two stages: the Preliminary Examination (Prelims) and the Main Examination (Mains). Each stage has its specific syllabus. UPSC Preliminary Examination Syllabus:

Paper-I: General Studies (200 marks)

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision-making and problem-solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) - Class X level
  • Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc.) - Class X level

Paper-II: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) (200 marks)

  • Current events of national and international importance
  • History of India and the Indian National Movement
  • Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World
  • Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity, and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization
  • General Science

Note: The marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination are not counted for the final selection, but it serves as a screening test for the Mains Examination.

USPC CSE Mains Exam Syllabus

1. Paper-A: Indian Language (Qualifying)

Candidates have to choose one Indian language from the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This paper is of qualifying nature, and candidates need to score a minimum qualifying mark (as determined by UPSC) to clear the exam. The script of the language should be either Devanagari or Roman.

2. Paper-B: English (Qualifying)

Similar to Paper-A, this paper is of qualifying nature. Candidates need to score a minimum qualifying mark in this English language paper.

3. Paper-I: Essay

This paper evaluates the candidate's ability to express their thoughts coherently and effectively on a given topic.

4. Paper-II: General Studies-I

This paper includes the following topics:

  • Indian Heritage and Culture
  • History and Geography of the World and Society
  • Social Issues

5. Paper-III: General Studies-II

This paper covers the following areas:

  • Governance
  • Constitution
  • Polity
  • Social Justice
  • International Relations

6. Paper-IV: General Studies-III

This paper comprises the following subjects:

  • Technology
  • Economic Development
  • Biodiversity
  • Environment
  • Security and Disaster Management

7. Paper-V: General Studies-IV

This paper focuses on the following aspects:

  • Integrity
  • Aptitude

8. Paper-VI: Optional Subject - Paper I

Candidates have to choose one optional subject from the UPSC's list. The optional subject consists of two papers (Paper I and Paper II). Candidates can select their preferred subject from the list of optional subjects provided by the UPSC.

9. Paper-VII: Optional Subject - Paper II

This is the second paper for the chosen optional subject.

Each paper carries a specific number of marks, and the candidates' performance in these papers, except the qualifying papers, is used to determine their final rank and selection to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and other allied services.
